23, 2004. 09:20am You know, because I'm in the "glamorous" film industry, every time I have the Costner clan over to the Costner Ranch, every member of the fam, down to the very last 3rd cousin, has a million questions for me. And that's ok. I didn't choose to work in the public eye without knowing that I wasn't going to ever be "normal old Uncle Kevin." Now, not everyone in the extended Costner family is a millionaire of course. Which can make things a little awkward - because one of the most common questions I get is "Kev, these Bison steaks are great, but we don't have the kind of money you have! Why should I spend the extra money when I can get a pound of beef for next to nothing at my local grocery store?" Well, when someone says something like that to me, this is what I tell them: The value of buffalo is not what you pay, but what you get in return. Nutritionally you are getting more protein and nutrients with fewer calories and less fat. Buffalo is a dense meat that tends to satisfy you more while eating less. It really makes me angry when people, financially strapped as they may be, aren't willing to drop a single extra dollar on a product whose flavor and value far outstrip the competition. What has this country become, where we are so blinded by our love of money that we forget the things that are really important, like a rich marbled texture, the joy of knowing you are eating an animal that lived out its life with dignity, and of course our HEALTH? Readers' Digest magazine has even listed bison as one of the five foods women should eat because of the high iron content! So come on people, let's have a little perspective here. You only live once... and clinging to every last penny isn't going to make you live any longer - but a low calorie bison steak just might. PREVIOUS ENTRY -- NEXT ENTRY |
